Bruce-lens

Special Presentation screening with Bruce Sweeney & Cast June 14, 7pm at The Ridge,
Co-presented with First Weekend Club
Additional screenings June 16 & 17, 7pm at Fifth Avenue Cinema

Vancouver- Union Pictures in association with Slewfoot Productions is pleased to present EXCiTED, a new comedy by Bruce Sweeney. EXCiTED is the fifth feature film from Sweeney, and has been nominated for nine Leo awards this year, including Best Feature, Best Director and Best Screenplay, with Best Supporting Performance nods to Gabrielle Rose, Paul Skrudland, and Agam Darshi, and a nomination for Laara Sadiq as Best Female Lead. Director/Writer Bruce Sweeney will be in attendance and host a Q & A after all screenings.

Audiences will remember Sweeney’s earlier feature films American Venus, Last Wedding, and Live Bait. Sweeney’s stories examine the dark side of family and sexual relationships with wry wit and charming candor. He’s been described as having a “… forte for unnervingly intimate, squirm-inducing almost-comedies that cut close to the bone in more ways than one.” (Jason Anderson, Toronto Star)

Kevin Staal, (Cam Cronin) 37, is a successful businessman. He suffers from primary premature ejaculation. Divorced and eight years without a date, he has finally met someone he likes. Hayaam, (Laara Sadiq) 39, is educated, infertile, and employed at a shoe store. A few roadblocks stand in the way of Kevin’s desire to fall in love and start a family; Kevin’s sexual problem, his rusty courting skills and his smothering mother’s (Gabrielle Rose) desperate need for a grandchild. EXCiTED takes a wry look at relationships, examining the changing nature of intimacy in a modern world.

“Sweeney’s cast undercuts expectations by delivering naturalistic performances, thereby lending truth and texture to characters… Excited clearly benefits from the director’s close collaboration with his actors in developing the film, using methods he initially learned as a student of Mike Leigh. -Jason Anderson, Toronto Star

“A film about expectations, be they personal, social or sexual, Excited bears Sweeney’s trademark wit, with knowing and honest insight into human behaviour’ -Jesse Wente, CBC Radio Film Critic

“Sharp, incisive and wickedly funny, Sweeney’s films are unique in the way they combine a caustic, comic awareness of how screwed up human beings generally are with a muted yet profound empathy for most of his characters… EXCITED is one of his best.”
-Steve Gravestock, Programmer/ Associate Director, Canadian Programming TIFF
