Made Queen of Sweden at the age of six, following the death of her father, young Kristina was raised as a prince, often even dressing as a boy. Growing up, she enjoyed the males’ freedom of thought and expression.
This film explores the character of the complex Queen, and the events and relationships that lead to her abdication: with Catholic French Ambassador Chanut, Protestant Chancellor Axel, Oxtenstierna and the beautiful lady-in-waiting Ebba May.
Central to her life is her friendship with philosopher Réne Descartes, whose teachings on free will and destiny prompted Kristina to choose truth to oneself over tradition, a conclusion that lead to her dramatic abdication at the age of 26.
